I also use a Selig Gain at the beginning and end of the chain to compare levels. Normally, when you route an audio signal into a compressor, the input itself determines the compressor's response. The louder the input signal, the more compression is applied, and the Attack and Release Controls respond to peaks in the signal that is being processed.
